Critical thinking and media literacy
Mass media is in today’s world the main source of information and entertainment for everyone, from television and films to radio, social networks, newspapers, video games and advertisements. Each format delivers messages that are designed with a purpose and intention which as consumers is very important to identify to avoid falling into believing fake information. That is why critical thinking and media literacy have become crucial in the current state of the world.
First, it is important to define these terms. Critical thinking is the ability to analyze data and moving beyond superficial understanding by questioning the values, ideologies and intentions that lie beneath the content we consume. Media literacy is closely linked to critical thinking; it entails reading with the aim of uncovering hidden messages, being aware of bias and reflect on the language being used. Both strategies help you navigate a world full of fake news and content made to manipulate you into taking a decision whether it is buying a specific product or endorsing a politician.
Not to say all mass media produced is bad, it is just an approach to empower individuals to become active interpreters rather than passive consumers. People need to be able to choose what to watch and read, and what to take from that content instead of being fed information that intends to blindly persuade.
